Neumann BCM 705 Premium Dynamic Broadcast Microphone
The Neumann BCM 705 is a professional dynamic broadcast microphone developed specifically for radio, podcasting, voice production and other demanding speech applications. Its distinctive design is purpose-built for broadcast environments, combining a focused hypercardioid pickup pattern with practical features intended for intensive everyday studio use.
Unlike Neumann’s studio condenser microphones, the BCM 705 uses a dynamic capsule. This makes it particularly well suited to close-range speech recording and broadcast environments where controlled pickup, robust operation and effective rejection of surrounding sound are essential.
The capsule features a hypercardioid polar pattern, concentrating strongly on the speaker while reducing pickup from the sides and rear. This focused directivity helps isolate the voice from studio ambience, nearby equipment and other unwanted acoustic sources.
A distinctive feature of the BCM 705 is its internally switchable proximity-effect compensation. Close microphone positioning normally increases low-frequency response considerably; the compensation system allows this effect to be controlled to achieve a more balanced voice reproduction when the microphone is used at typical broadcast distances.
Directly in front of the capsule is a fine integrated pop-screen layer, designed to reduce plosive sounds generated by consonants such as “p” and “b”. This internal protection supports clean speech recording without making an additional external pop filter essential in standard broadcast use.
The microphone’s front grille can be quickly unscrewed for cleaning, an important practical feature in professional radio and production studios where microphones may be shared between several presenters. Neumann also offers interchangeable grilles in different colours, allowing individual users to maintain their own grille for improved hygiene.
The capsule assembly can be elastically isolated from the microphone body, reducing the transmission of mechanical vibration and structure-borne noise. This is particularly useful when the BCM 705 is installed on articulated broadcast arms and frequently repositioned during live production.
Its frequency range extends from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, while a nominal impedance of 200 ohms makes it suitable for professional microphone preamplifiers, broadcast consoles and audio interfaces. As a dynamic microphone, the BCM 705 does not depend on phantom power for its capsule operation.
With its dedicated broadcast architecture, hypercardioid response, integrated pop protection and serviceable grille system, the Neumann BCM 705 is designed as a specialized professional voice microphone rather than a conventional general-purpose studio model.
