Rega Planar 3 Nd3 MM Hi-Fi Turntable in Black

The Rega Planar 3 Nd3 MM in Black is a refined Hi-Fi turntable built around Rega’s lightweight, high-rigidity engineering philosophy. Developed as the successor to the acclaimed RP3, it combines a precision belt-drive system, glass platter, RB330 tonearm and Nd3 Moving Magnet cartridge in a minimalist high-gloss design.

At the heart of the construction is a high-density MDF plinth finished in gloss acrylic. Rega’s Double Brace Technology reinforces the critical area between the tonearm mounting and the main bearing housing with two rigid braces. This approach increases structural rigidity while avoiding unnecessary mass, helping suppress unwanted resonance around the key mechanical components.

The turntable uses a 12 mm Optiwhite glass platter supported by a lightweight, rigid Makrolon polycarbonate sub-platter. A felt mat is supplied as standard. The redesigned main bearing assembly and improved mounting help maintain stable rotation while reducing mechanical stress on the bearing.

Drive is provided by a low-noise 24 V synchronous AC motor engineered for reduced vibration and improved stability. The Planar 3 supports 33⅓ and 45 rpm playback, with speed changed manually by repositioning the drive belt between the motor pulley steps. An optional compatible Rega external power supply can provide electronic speed switching.

One of the defining components is the Rega RB330 tonearm, developed using CAD and 3D modelling. Its tapered cast-aluminium arm tube incorporates a fixed headshell, while precision low-friction bearings support accurate movement. Adjustable tracking force and anti-skating allow precise cartridge setup.

This version is supplied with the Rega Nd3 Moving Magnet cartridge, creating a carefully matched analogue playback system straight from the box. The turntable does not include an integrated phono preamplifier, allowing it to be paired with a dedicated external phono stage or an amplifier equipped with a suitable phono input.

A fixed RCA output cable maintains a direct analogue signal path, while redesigned Santoprene feet help isolate the turntable from external vibration. The result is a deliberately focused design with no unnecessary digital functions between the record and the rest of the Hi-Fi system.

Finished in Black with a high-gloss surface, the Planar 3 combines understated aesthetics with precision mechanical engineering. Its rigid lightweight structure, glass platter and RB330 tonearm make it a compelling choice for a dedicated high-quality analogue system.
