The Sennheiser MK 4 is a professional large-diaphragm condenser microphone designed for detailed studio recording of vocals, acoustic instruments and amplified sources. At the heart of the MK 4 is a 1-inch diaphragm coated with 24-carat gold. Its capsule is engineered to deliver consistent sensitivity and a natural, detailed response across the full 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range, preserving both low-frequency depth and fine upper-frequency information.

The microphone uses a fixed cardioid polar pattern, concentrating primarily on the sound source in front of the capsule while reducing pickup from the rear. This focused response is particularly useful for lead vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, percussion and other sources where separation from surrounding room sound is important.

With a sensitivity of 25 mV/Pa, the MK 4 captures subtle details even from moderately quiet sources. Its low 10 dB(A) self-noise makes it suitable for nuanced vocal and acoustic recordings where the microphone’s own noise floor needs to remain unobtrusive.

At the opposite end of the dynamic spectrum, the MK 4 handles sound-pressure levels of up to 140 dB SPL. Combined with a dynamic range of approximately 130 dB, this allows it to move from delicate performances to substantially louder sources such as guitar amplifiers, percussion and brass instruments without requiring a different microphone.

The capsule is mounted internally using an elastic suspension system designed to reduce the transmission of handling and structure-borne vibration. This provides additional mechanical isolation directly inside the microphone and complements its rigid all-metal exterior.

Its uncomplicated signal architecture makes the MK 4 a practical studio workhorse. There are no onboard pattern selectors, pads or filters to complicate operation: the microphone is designed around a carefully engineered capsule, cardioid response and clean analogue signal path.

The MK 4 operates from standard 48 V phantom power and draws approximately 3.1 mA, making it compatible with professional microphone preamps, mixing consoles and modern audio interfaces. Connection is through a conventional balanced XLR output.
